Growing up is tough. Growing up with learning difficulties is much tougher:

Most of us can remember moments of physical pain and more moments of emotional pain while growing up. The physical pain comes from lack of awareness, like our feet just grew and the toes against the corner of the dresser just reminded us of that. Other awareness issues like inability to read fluently, understand math, carry a tune, harmonize, balance gracefully, or throw and catch a ball can cause emotional pain. Emotional pain comes from the other insecure members in our environment, (any classmates or co-workers who are not mature and kind by nature) and their negative comments. The pain from vicious comments or taunting is multiplied by the fear that the negative comments are right. Major emotional pain comes from accepting the concept that we are "slow" (developing, running, thinking, seeing, hearing), or are otherwise un-cool. When a child is slower than average in several developmental areas, the reality does degrade self esteem, which adds to the problem. Improving the function of the brain can eliminate the pain caused by dysfunction.

Learning Difficulties, How they are normally defined?

Learning difficulties are generally categorized and defined as follows:

ADD or attention deficit disorder or inability to pay attention in class.

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or inability to pay attention or sit still in class. ADHD is simply a more energetic form of ADD. Healthy boys are full of energy.

Dyslexia is a mental sequencing problem that is frequently diagnosed by observing reversed letters and words. Another common symptom is getting lost frequently.

What is the cause of ADD, ADHD, and Dyslexia:

ADD or attention deficit disorder is a collection of symptoms that medically has no specific cause or treatment. Our interpretation of ADD is that it can be caused by three different but related causes.

First, if a child's neural network is insufficiently developed, his information processing will be too slow. He will pay attention while a bit of information comes at him and get it. When the next bit comes at him, he is a bit behind while he processes that bit and tries to remember the next bit for processing. While remembering and processing the next bit of information, the subsequent bit is missed entirely. Without the missing bit, the next bit does not make sense and his attention is "out the window." Because "This teacher just doesn't make any sense." In addition, stress and depression related to the inability to keep up exacerbates the learning difficulties, resulting in frustration and behavior issues related to that frustration.

Second, if a child's memory is underdeveloped, a distraction will divert his attention. When that distraction is over, there is no memory of what he was doing before the distraction, and he is gone "out the window." Most of us have at least two tracks in our memory, the urgent and the important. Without the important track being operational, any distraction leads to a loss of focus on the important.

Third, if a child is bright and "Got it" last week or last month, he is likely to be thinking about something else and hence miss new information. This is best described as "boredom intolerance" and is a symptom of a slow school rather than a slow mind. Children that do poorly in school but can do well on tests are probably in this category.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is an inadequate development of the neural network specifically as it effects direction and sequencing. See the second cause of ADD and ADHD above

How are ADD, ADHD and Dyslexia treated?

All of these issues are treated by exercises which stimulate the neural centers of the brain, including Eyesight, Hearing, Gross Motor Movement (Whole Body), Fine Motor Movement (Speech), Long Term Memory, and Short Term Memory, all simultaneously. This stimulates the development of neural pathways between all of these active neural centers and all of the other active neural centers. The result is improved information processing effecting all of these areas. All of the cognitive functions are improved by this denser neural network, i.e. memory, balance, visual processing including peripheral vision, auditory processing, reaction time, and athletic ability. As the neural networks develop, the ability to process information increases and the stress and frustration decrease, This reduced stress frees energy to focus on learning. The effective bandwidth of the brain is widened. The effect can be rapid and dramatic.

When the program is diligently applied, it is common for a child who is on special education programs to become capable of dropping the special education and sometimes achieves honor roll performance. When learning becomes easy instead of difficult or impossible, the frustration levels decrease and acting out behavior is greatly reduced. Intra family or intra school conflict is normally reduced. The program has also proven effective in treating Bipolar Disorder.

Autism or Aspergers Syndrome

Autism or Aspergers syndrome is a health related disorder with many complicating factors and the medical community is frequently in disagreement over how to diagnose it. The cause is little understood, so treatment is normally ineffective. The symptoms generally include reluctance to socialize, loss of verbal abilities and social skills, and a low functioning immune system. A loss of mental abilities indicates brain damage. Possible causes include toxins in the environment and allergic reactions. A hereditary link indicates a possible inherited inability to detoxify the body.

How is Autism treated?

Autism must be addressed on several fronts. Without addressing some of the health issues, the ongoing brain damage may undo much of what is gained. I have some referral sources for these health issues. Once the health is partially restored, the program is useful in restoring the brain circuitry that was omitted from development due to interference from the disease, or lost due to the brain damage caused by this disease. Dyspraxia or inability to initiate speech is a common problem with autism and is significantly helped by this program.

Origin of this Program:

This program so successfully used in the Excel Learning Centers had its earliest inception in Dr. Winkleman's optometry practice.  Schools would refer students when they were not learning to read "to get their eyes checked".  Dr. Winkleman became aware that frequently the problem had nothing to do with the eyes, which were fine, but had everything to do with the processing of information in the brain. He began to research brain development, how it occurs normally, why it sometimes does not occur as it should, and how to stimulate the brain to develop missing connections necessary to efficiently and effectively process information.

The issue of learning difficulties became personal when Dr. Winkelman's bright, 140 IQ, son was being asked to repeat the first grade for the second time. The research in brain development went from a major interest to a driving passion. He acquired a PhD in Educational Psychology as a part of this research process. The research led to the development of a program to stimulate brain programming and improve brain function. Work with his son at this point led him to an understanding that his son could read, but the performance anxiety from being asked to read out loud in front of the class froze him up. Utilizing this program with people with learning difficulties became his career. During this 40 year career, the program has been continually tested and improved.
